BISHOP’S CHARTIABLE FUND SUPPORTS NEW HORIZONS’ MISSION

MANCHESTER, NH:  New Horizons for New Hampshire recently received two much needed grants from the Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund to support the emergency shelter, soup kitchen and food pantry at 199 Manchester Street, Manchester.

The money will be used to offset the added costs we have experienced from the result of Hurricane Irene, and to support the upcoming 18th annual NewHorizons’ Thanksgiving Breakfast to be held on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 at the Radisson in Manchester.

The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund makes grants to tax-exempt organization without regard to religious affiliation for projects that help people in New Hampshire meet their basic needs.  The Fund is operated by volunteer lay men and women who serve the Directors and who make recommendations to the Bishop of Manchester for grants to any organization in New Hampshire whose mission is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.  The Fund raises money through solicitation of individuals, businesses, and philanthropic organizations.  An annual accounting of funds raised and disbursements is available at www.catholicnh.org/BCAF.

“During Hurricane Irene and recent power outage, New Horizons for New Hampshire provided important services to the homeless population as well as to others seeking food and shelter. The number of children and people served meals in our dining room and staying in our shelter increased dramatically. We also added an additional meal during the Hurricane. All of this compounded our situation as we were forced to add extra staff, mostly at overtime rates as well as food product,” said Charlie Sherman NHNH Executive Director.

Hoping to raise over $75,000 for New Horizons and Angie’s Shelter for Women this year, Nancy Comai, NHNH Development Director said, “It wouldn’t be possible without the kind generosity of many people who are committed to ending the hunger and homelessness crisis in our community.  This funding is just what we needed to kick start our efforts.”

The Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast is the signature event for New Horizons and Angie’s Shelter for Women.  It has become a tradition that the people and business leaders of Greater Manchester look forward to, continued Sherman, “We have been told by many attendees over the years that the Breakfast inspires them to get in the spirit of the season by hearing about the great needs of persons in our shelters, and those who use the soup kitchen and food pantry and how their needs are being met through the generosity and volunteerism of our community members.”

New Horizons Hampshire located at 199 Manchester Street and Angie’s Shelter for Women on Union Street in Manchester.

“For nearly 40 years NHNH has served the hungry and homeless in Greater Manchester to help them become self-sufficient.  In these challenging economic times, we are very fortunate to receive this generous support from the Bishop’s Charitable Fund.  It will allow us to offset many of the extra expenses incurred due to recent weather related events and will provide support for one of our signature community fund raising efforts” said Roy Tilsley, Jr.  NHNH Board President.
