New Horizons to Construct Urban Greenhouse

New venture will supply fresh food to soup kitchen and food pantry

Manchester, NH – August 13, 2013

New Horizons for New Hampshire has partnered with Rimol Greenhouse Systems of Hooksett, NH to build a greenhouse in which New Horizons can grow produce for its soup kitchen and food pantry. The greenhouse, which is being donated by Rimol Greenhouse Systems, is a 30 x 72 polycarbonate structure. It will be located on the lot adjacent to New Horizons.

Mike Marrett, Owner of Rimol Greenhouse Systems said “We are thrilled to be able to work with New Horizons and provide a vehicle for them to increase their self-sufficiency”.

New Horizons plans to plant and grow its own produce in the greenhouse under the supervision of a master gardener with trained volunteers. This will be the only urban greenhouse located in a major city in the State of New Hampshire.

“I am so thrilled at this wonderful donation by Rimol, we look forward to growing our own fruits and vegetables to provide to our clients.” said New Horizons Executive Director, Charlie Sherman.

The site work has begun and construction is scheduled for the week of August 12th.

Each day New Horizons for New Hampshire provides hot meals to over 250 individuals and families, each month over 900 individuals and families look to New Horizons for groceries and every night an average of 80 adult men and women stay in New Horizons’ two shelters.

Manchester Meter Program Seeks to Deter Panhandling

Painted Meters to be Presented to New Horizons

Manchester, NH – July 16, 2013

On Thursday, July 18th at 5:00pm local artists and Manchester Alderman Pat Long, Ward 3, will present six newly painted “homeless meters” to Charlie Sherman, Executive Director of New Horizons for New Hampshire. The presentation will occur in the Pine Street parking lot adjacent to New Horizons.

These meters will be installed in six locations around the city to collect donations to benefit the city’s most needy residents. The meters are termed “Spare Change Meters” and are repurposed coin-operated parking meters set up to collect donations for New Horizons. The idea is similar to programs already established in Baltimore, Minneapolis and Denver.

Money deposited would go directly to New Horizons which operates a soup kitchen, food pantry and homeless shelters. The goal is to reduce panhandling and educate business owners and residents about the problem of giving money directly to people on the streets.

“I think this is a wonderful idea that is working successfully in a number of other communities across the country” said New Horizons Executive Director, Charlie Sherman.

Each day New Horizons for New Hampshire provides hot meals to over 250 individuals and families, each month over 900 individuals and families look to New Horizons for groceries and every night an average of 80 adult men and women stay in New Horizons’ two shelters.
