MANCHESTER, NH - JULY 23, 2009
The Sixth Annual Bill Kelley Memorial Road Race was held on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at the Executive Health & Sports Center, had a record turn-out of 310 runners and raised $17,500 for New Horizons and Angie’s Shelter for Women. Mike Benton, Owner Executive Health & Sports Center and Attorney Roy Tilsley, Jr., both long time friends of Bill Kelley originated the race six years ago to remember their close friend Bill Kelley.“Bill will always be remembered as someone who loved life and serving people,” said Tilsley.
Bill fought a courageous battle with cancer up until his death in 2003. He was a life-long Manchester resident who graduated from Bishop Bradley High School, received degrees from Boston College and Harvard Law School, and was a founding member of New Horizons for New Hampshire located at 199 Manchester Street in Manchester. Bill Kelley’s commitment to his community was evident in the many community organizations he served.
“As many of you know, the Bill Kelley Memorial Road Race is a critical fundraiser for New Horizons for New Hampshire. For over 30 years NHNH has served the hungry and homeless in Greater Manchester to help them become self-sufficient. In these challenging economic times, we are very fortunate to have such a group of caring people who put countless hours into this fundraiser for New Horizons,” said Scott Colby, New Horizons Board President, “it is their commitment to serve others that helps to sustain our mission especially during the tough summer months.”
The friends of Attorney Bill Kelley go well beyond expectations with an annual road race in his honor. Between the record 310 runners/walkers who registered for either the 10k or 5k, the many friends and family who came out to enjoy the festivities, coupled with sponsorships and the silent auction, over $17,500 was raised to support New Horizons in this critical time when the food pantry shelves are bare.
